I find that old rule a good measure if you're working with small fish (like tetras and the like), otherwise I use a different approach.

I think it's better to understock a tank than the alternative, for the overall health of the fish.

What I go by is the nitrAte level. To me, it's not how many fish I wish to put in a tank...it's just how frequently I need to do partial water changes to keep the nitrAtes at a certain healthy level (there is ongoing debate about the actual harm of nitrAtes to fish, but it certainly can also indicate total pollutants in an aquarium as well).

Using this frame of reference, do mind making partial water changes on a daily basis, every week, ever
