Ammonia in my Tapwater

I just tested my city tapwater for the first time and have 0.5 ppm of Ammonia in it. I have been doing frequent water changes to reduce the small amount of ammonia in my tank, and now find out the reason is maybe the tap. Thank goodness, in re-testing the tapwater with a few drops of "Prime" in it, the test shows zero. So, on those days I didn't use Prime, but used only dechlorinator I was putting in more ammonia than taking out. Anyone else have this problem and what is the answer? I plan to call my water compnay tomorrow and see what they say. I am thinking of an R/O unit for drinking water and fish water, but will it remmove ammonia? So many questions I have, any help is appreciated.
