salt and nitrates

I was interested in part of an earlier posting that suggests that salt might help reduce nitrates. What's the function? Why does it work? If it does, might salt be the active ingredient in nitrate-reducing filter materials? To what extent will it affect catfish and plecos? I know lots of water changes are best, but I've got nitrates present in my local water and would love to keep my clowns at their happiest. Thanks for reading so many questions for the price of one!
