Tank Stupidity ?

Hi There all.
I have a feeling I just did a dumb thing.... the only loach related bit is that my clowns are in this tank. It is a 40 ish Gal tank that is quite long ( 1.1 M ). I recently removed the hood, took all the lights out and used overhead lighting. This was realy nice as the plants can grow out of the water.

Then I noticed that the two parallel peices of glass, 2" wide, glued to the upper part of the front and back of the tank, used to hold the lights were quite ugly. So I removed them with a razor blade. These were 2" wide and at 90 Deg to the glass at the top. I have a nasty feeling they were not just there to hold lights, but to add ridgidity to the top of the tank.

As I look down length of the glass at the top of the tank, from one end to the other, I can *just* make out the glass is bowed
