Do they have to have a "cave"??

Hello,
I have 2 loaches among a variety of about 20 other fishes in my tank including mollys,neons,plattys,frogs and pl*cos. The loaches are my favorite!!
I have read that they need a private hiding place to go to. Is this true? Everything that I construct for them is taken over by the pl*cos. Will they go into a place through a hole about their size that a pl*co cannot? One of them went into the rocks when not occupied and I finally got to see him laying on his side for the first time! What a really cool fish.
I have also heard about people cutting a piece of PVC pipe in half for a good loach home. My problem is the damn suckerfish taking it over and I need to know if the loaches will go into a hole that will barely fit them and keep the suckerfish out. They always retreat to one corner of the tank, is this a good place for it? They pretty much rule the area that they w
