color changes anyone?

I have noticed over the years with Clown Loaches, that their color changes.

I don't mean over an extended period of time, but sometimes in almost minutes. It seems that when they are frigtened their black stripes pale to a darkish gray, and when they are happy or feeling territorial at all, they darken.

Has anyone else noticed this in their Clowns? Sometimes it almost seems to depend on what stones they are hiding by. Are they perhaps slightly Chameleonesque?

Also, I have changed my sustrate from a light colored stone mix to a dark red sand and black pebble mix. The Clowns have become noticeably more active since I did this. They also enjoy terraforming with the sand; digging little pits all about the tank.

Does anyone know how to distinguish sex between Clowns? I have 3; two are
