Borneo loach

I bought a couple of "Borneo loaches" to keep in my coldwater tank 2 months ago but they seem fairly different - one is dark with light spots and the other has a lighter background colour with dots and dashes - is there a difference between male/female?
Also they don't feed on anything except algae in the tank. I also have 5 White Cloud Minnows & 3 goldfish who all feed on flake & freeze dried tubifex, bloodworm, daphnia & live mosquite larvae - oh and algae pellets. However the loaches have never shown any interest in those foods.
They don't interact with each other at all but are active. My daughter (2 1/2)adores them and finds them for me everyday!
