My story sounds almost exactly like that of Jim Powers from a week ago. I stopped at my LFS and checked the borneo suckers, and there it was: a hillstream loach of some variety I'd never seen before. It has much the same shape as a Beaufortia, but the coloration and markings are quite different, more like those of the Homaloptera species sold as lizardfish: a golden brown background with partially marked bars of darker brown perpendicular to the spinal chord. The closest thing I could find in the Species Index is Sinogastromyzon puliensis: it looks much like the upper left image, though somewhat more mottled with the barred pattern I mentioned. The nose is broad and rounded with no sign of barbels.
