warming the water

I became a fish owner when our neighborhood had a block party and a small pool was filled with comets. Lucky me my daughter caught a couple and
we took them home. We had 2 one recently died.
I decided to give "Goldie" another friend.
At the pet store I was looking at the fish.
And there were 2 clown loaches that were very lively so I decided to get them along with a new partner for the comet. I'm still in the learning
process of keeping fish. I noticed an odd sound
and thought perhaps I may have not reconnected the
pump hoses correctly. But it seems it's a noise
the loaches make. My question is (I'll get to it eventually)... I put a thermometer (not before time) in the tank. The water is a little cool 78degrees. From what I've been looking on the internet, it seems I need the
