Preparing Bamboo

I have an 8 foot long piece of bamboo, that's about 3 inches ID. I would like to use this in my clown tank, cut up of course. However, I'm not sure how to make sure it is safe. I have had it for almost a year, and it's now pretty yellow.
(Boy, that back bedroom acumulates the strangest stuff!) I have no idea if it was ever treated with pesticides etc.. So, does anybody know of a way to "clean" it so it's safe? Or better left alone?
TIA
