Just lost the final clown loach.

You know, I'm kinda new at this aquarium thing but I'm extremely dedicated and curious and have a great lfs to help me, but I can't get a clown loach to live to save my life. My wife and I got 1 initally from a crappy shop that didn't bother to tell me that they should be kept in groups. So he lasted a few months and I got a pleco for the tank and something he had wiped out the whole tank. So by this time we really have to have some more clowns and we go to the greatest shop there ever was (Aquatic Critter in Nashville) and get 3 more. Two of them were about an inch and a half and pencil thin and the other was about 3 inches. Well the thin ones died in a few weeks and now, about 3 months later, the big boy died. All went the same way, doing fine one day, spending the next day floating vertically near the top half of the tank, and buying tiny little farm land the next. The only symptom I've seen is extremely rapid breating the final day. To Aquatic Critter's credit they wouldn't sell me any more after the original 2 thin ones died, stating that the ones they had left were obviously sick and were being treated. I've also had 3 different places that they've all gotten "bad batches" lately.
So we finally come to the questions. Is there any need for me to continue trying these guys or should I just live the rest of my life with tiger barbs and mollies? Is there anything I could have done with these guys to save them? Would the Levamisole stuff I've been reading about here have helped? And the big final question...
Should I set my quarantine tank up for clowns and buy 10 of the new super-tiny ones I've found recently and start dosing them with Levamisole immediately?
Dear God help me. It's very irritating to have found our favorite fish and not be able to get any to survive!
Thanks for any help,
C.R.
P.S. BTW, I don't have any affiliation with Aquatic Critter other than a very satisfied customer.
