how many clowns?

Hi. I have a 22 US gallon tank in which I have kept 2 clowns with various tetras for 2 years. However, I recently had an ick epidemic which claimed the lives of most of my fish :( Sadly my loaches perished as well :( Now that the ick is all gone I want to restock my tank with only clown loaches and a small school of tetras. So my question is: How many clown loaches could I keep happily in a 22gal tank (3 feet long, 1 foot high, 1 foot wide)?
