lost loach: starvation or stress

I had a fair bit of algae going in my tank...mostly green stuff on the botton glass and rocks. I added two yellow loaches to my tank, hoping they might help keep the algae at bay. The first two weeks they just lay around and hid. The next week one became more active, but my sunset platy chased him around constantly. The sunset previously got along with a clown loach that I lost to ich, but did not like this new loach.

At any rate, the two loaches didn't seem to eat any of the algae in the tank or eat anything else and now one has died. Went from swimming actively to dead in about an hour. Any guesses on whether it could have died from starvation or from the stress of being chased all day?
