New Tank - HELP

Although I've had a tank for a long time, I've never actually set one up without benefit of gravel/filters/etc. from an old tank. Now I have two huge orphan dojos (6" each, male and female) and need to start this 55g from scratch, as I moved to a different city and left my tank behind. Can I get them through this? I have alway heard that dojos are very sensitive to nitrites. I'm already attached to them and would hate for them to have more stress than they've already had. I saw that Nikki recommended Prime - can you tell me the steps to use for keeping my beautiful dojos alive?
