How long does black spot last?

I know this topic has been beaten to death, but I suspect my clowns may not have black spot at all.

I believe it was last winter, late last year in fact, that I removed a large artificial root from my aquarium. It was hollow on top, and rather than hiding below the clowns would hide inside the roots, inside the plastic ornament. The top was open, and the light created almost a sludge of brown algae. It appeared to be on the fish as well, so I removed the root (permanently) and gave them caves to hide in instead. I figured that being out of the light would eventually kill the algae that I believed was on them.

Well it hasn't, and now I think it may be black spot instead, but wouldn't that have passed by now
