I had a problem with cloudy water for a couple of weeks. During that time my clowns were all over the tank and having a good time. Finally I got tired of waiting for the tank to clear and bought a product that cleared the tank right up in a few hours. Since then they have spent most of their time hiding. Apparently they liked the murkiness. I'm wondering if some of that blackwater tonic used for South Americans might help? Darkening the water a little might make them feel more secure. Their tankmates are South Americans (bleeding heart tetras).
