Adding "softer" gravel? - Any opinions?

My dojos have discovered the joys of burying themselves in the gravel. Unfortunately, since I had to set that tank up QUICK, I could only get the coarse gravel unless I wanted blue, green or pink. Anyway, they are now wearing down their barbels. I am just getting through the cycle and don't want to start all over again - I just don't think the tank is stable enough yet. I'm thinking I can just add an inch or two of fine gravel on top of the coarser gravel to provide them something less abrasive to bury themselves in. Does this sound like a decent solution or am I asking for trouble?
