Help!!! Clown Loaches Fighting, or Mating?

Please Help! We recently purchased another Clown Loach (we are calling a male, not sure) and we have had him for a week. He is approximately 4 inches long to go with one of our others who is also 4 inches (we think is a female we've had had for a couple of years) All of the sudden they are locking lips constantly. The male looks as though he has gotten kind of greyish. She looks sort of rosy on her cheeks. They are also sort of pecking at each other, and sort of wriggling together side by side. These are beautiful fish, and I don't want anything to happen to either of them. Should I seperate them? What would you do? Is this common?
Thanks!
