Curing Driftwood

I took a nice walk today along the Mississippi River and took home some nice-sized pieces or "driftwood".

I read a few articles already about curing it now for my tanks. I guess I'm wondering who out there has experience with doing this and what they would recomend?

I'm a little concerned about pollution too since I gathered this near the downtown area, where the barges and casino boats are. I know they fish for catfish there and I think even fry it up. How can one tell if the wood is polluted?

If I can't use it in the tanks, oh well, I still had an awesome day! :)
