Can/Do loaches bite?

I have a blue loach that my husband was trying to net to move it to a bigger tank. Well the loach kept coming up near where my hands were removing suction cups for the heater, so I thought I'd try to help by grabbing him the next time he came up in my hand and putting him in the net. Well, sure enough he swam right up into my hand and I grabbed him, not hard, just closed my fingers around him when I suddenly felt a sharp needle feeling in my palm, which let him be immediately released. Now, did he bite me or did his spine come out or what was it that broke the skin?? I'm just curious. Thanks :)
