Clowns and sand...?

So, I posted earlier and got some information about a clown loaches natural habitat and I was considering putting sand in the tank for the middle area and them have it move to more gravel around the ends of the tank. (i figure that some sand will move about to the edges as well)

Is this a good idea with clowns? Also, I have been doing some reading about adding sand and some people are saying just to use Playground Type sand that you can get at like Toys R'Us. Any opinions?

Does this raise the Ph levels?

Thanks - jason
