CLOWN COLORING

When my Clowns are healthy and happy, they are reddish-orange over jet-black. The color will change when the tank needs to be cleaned!

Then someone mentioned them "flashing" (fading) when stressed in the short term- fighting, competing for food, etc. I had never really noticed it, but I watched, and sure enough, they do this!

Has anyone read HOW they do this? It must be somekind of electro-chemical change at the skin surface, but I am intrigued bacause they can change back and forth FAST! Within minutes!

I have been wondering, and I know marine fish change color through a electro-chemical reaction at the scale pigment centers. Any information RE this? GREG
