What is a good fish to keep the tank algae free?

I have had a Plecostomus (I like their mild behavor), Chinese Algae Eater, and Otocinclus. One of the latter two had a radical, hyper behavior I didn't like. One did a good job of keeping most of the algae off the plastic plants and glass, but I can't remember which one.

What is a good fish to keep the tank clean? Compatible with Clown Loaches.

I am totally in the dark about this subject. Is it even necessary to have one of these fish? Is algae harmful? Should I just keep the tank clean myself?

Also I am slowly switching to live plants. Would one of these fish just eat the plants?
