For Gareth: Tongs and Trimming Dead Leaves

You suggested using tongs to get to the bottom of a deep tank.

In another post, it was suggested that I remove the leaves that died from the shock of transplanting my first live plant. From this I assumed that trimming of dead leaves would be a weekly activity along with my water change.

Couldn't do THAT with tongs. What have I got wrong?
