Finding your own Driftwood

I see some of you have bought driftwood from exotic places. Is there any reason you can't just use a piece you find in a local pond, lake, stream or river IF you're confident the water is safe and you boil it well?

I can go the the Columbia River just a few miles away and just watch it float buy. Of course that wood floats, so I'd more likely pick a piece from the bottom of a small stream in the mountains where I could be sure it wasn't contaminated.

I plan to collect my own sand/gravel this way too unless someone warns me of possible dangers.
