Loach/Male Beta compatibility

Hi! I have a question for you all, about clown loaches' compatibility with male betas. I used to have a beta, in his own 10 gallon tank, and when I moved in with my husband, we merged our fish into a 20 gallon tank. He had several loaches at the time, as well as some buenos aires tetras. When I woke up one morning, my beta was dead - my husband's fish had eaten all of his beautiful fins off. Does anyone here keep loaches in the same tank as a male beta? I don't know if it was the buenos aires tetras or the clown loaches who had killed my beta, but I'd love to get another one, if the clown loaches weren't the culprits. By the way, we now have a 55 gallon tank, inhabited by only 2 clown loaches, if that helps any.
Thank you for any help!
