Urgent!!!! N.Vancouver Water alert

For all my friends in North Van and surrounding areas whose water comes from the Seymour reservoir, here is a release I received this morning from The District of North Vancouver. Be warned, it can and will affect your fish:
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Oct. 21, 2002

IRON CONTENT IN DRINKING WATER REMAINS HIGH

North Vancouver, B.C., Drinking water from the Greater Vancouver Regional District's Seymour source continues to contain higher than desirable concentrations of iron and ammonia. As a result, water from that source has a yellowish tinge and can exhibit a noticeable odour. The odour arises due to ammonia in the water combining with chlorine that is used for disinfection.

Medical Health Officer Dr. John Blatherwick has noted that drinking water remains safe to consume.

Increased iron and ammonia levels are associated with low lake levels and warmer water temperatures. Normal fall rains will alleviate the situation.

In the interim, the GVRD has reduced the amount of water being drawn from the Seymour supply (and increased that from the region's other two supply sources - Capilano and Coquitlam). Three higher-elevation mountain lakes that provide additional storage capacity have also been re-opened to add fresh water to Seymour and Capilano Lakes. Effects of these operational changes should be noticeable during the next several days.
