Buying "Dirty" Plants

When I can find one of the plants recommended to me, it's usually in a tank of plants only. I presume this is good as there is less chance of carrying a fish disease.

But because they have sat there a long time they are usually dirty looking as if covered with brown algae. Just dirty looking. This is not the very dark green algae I have a little of in my tank.

What would happen if I bought one of these plants? Would the plant eventually look better in my tank? Or would it introduce something bad to my plants and the rest of the tank?

I have many LFSs but a lot of trouble finding the plants recommended.
