Plant Fertilizer

My Narrow Leaf Chain Sword is sending out runners and starting new plants really well, but the leaves are almost yellow. Mr. Leadfoot suggested that I needed fertilizer, but I need some help understanding what that means.

I understand that there are basically two types of what is generally called "fertilizer."

1. The type I have which contains only Iron and other trace elements.

I understand that yellow leaves indicate a need for more Iron, as it does in my garden.

BTW, the last time I used this type I got an algae bloom. But at the same time I increased my lighting, so that could have contributed to the problem. Also I went from zero Iron (in my tap water) to the full recommended dosage of Iron
