Guppies in a Bowl

I just sent the following e-mail to my brother. We raised guppies in large jars in the '50s. Maybe some of you have some comments.

Hi David,

I have learned a lot about keeping fish... the cycle of food, poop, ammonia, nitrites and finally nitrates. And how to keep it under control by cycling the tank and doing partial water changes.

What I can't figure out is how in the world we kept guppies alive in a big jar. Or Nanny kept a goldfish (reported to be dirtier) in a bowl.

When I helped Savannah try this last year, they all kept dying and we gave up. Now she wants to try again.

I have one thought.

I kept killing the fish in my aquarium because I would clean EVERYTHING
