loaches that go grey

Boyfriend has several loaches about 7cms in length, and pretty robust looking fishies they are. One however, goes grey every now and then while doing things within his normal range of behaviour.

For instance today he was digging and the black stripes were getting paler and paler until they were a sickly shade of grey, and the orange also turned a shade of grey. He stays like that for awhile slowly going back to his normal colours. His behaviour throughout remains unaffected.

What is causing this? does anyone else have any experiences with sort of thing?
