new tank

My husband and I are contemplating buying a new tank, possible a 55 or maybe a 75 gal. The lfs guy
told him that it was not necessary to get a under gravel filter. That they do not do much good and make no difference in the cleaning of the tank, that you still have to vacume the gravel as in any other tank.
The one I have now is a hex, 48 gallon without undergravel filter, running aquaclear 300. I vacume about every two weeks,
question?? which size to buy ?
55 gal or 75,with or without undergravel filter.
