lighting question

I am putting light into 2 tanks - a 18" long and a 2 foot long (no live plants) and was wondering if i could use the lights that people use under kitchen cupboards - I can get really cheaply a 16" one of 10w and a 24" one of 20w - will these light to the bottom of the tank (12") and will they show up the fish ok compared to a "proper aquarium light"?
