Power Outages

I have seen on the news that many people along the east coast are experiencing power outages and will loose fish do to the cold. I have been struck by this tradgedy myself. Down in the dirty south atl two years there was an ice storm that knocked the power out in my neighborhood for 6 days. The air temprature in my house quickly plumeted to that of the outsides. My clowns, kuklis and cardinals all died- no survivors. My tank has just been rejuvinated with the help of my new neighbor who woks for seachem 3 months ago. I vowed to myself that no more fish would became fishsicles agian. I now have my own ups power system that I did myself that will last many days and is continusouly upgradeable with the nuber of batteris i use with it.
To make youre own you need to add up the power usage of all of the things you want to be continusly powered by the backup. To convert amps to watts multiply by the voltage or 120. You need 3 things. A battery charger that is capable of many aps powere on a countinus duty. This will convert the 120 volts a/c to 12 volts d/c that the battery can store. You then need a battery. Mostly any 12 volt battery will do, but the more amp hours it has the longer it will last. After that you need a power inverter. This converts the 12 volt d/c into 120 volt a/c that you're appliances use. Key thing when picking this out is that you idealy want one that has a true sine wave and is double the wattage of the total. This is cuz floursent fixtures and motors can use up to 4 times as much electricity when they start up. If you get one that has a true sine wave good for you, if you didn't you may have some problems. If you test the voltage it may read 10 volts below cus it is not a true sine wave. To connect all of these things you plug in the charger and connect it to the battery. You the connect the inverter to the battery. Then oyu plug in the essential things like a heater all I have on my ups system. You keep this hoked up all of the time on you're heater, and when the power goes out the inverter draws power from the batter instad of the outlet in the wall. How can I post my picture, it's on my compter?
