Lighting Qs

I've seen references to keeping lights on for 10-12 hours a day. I've been keeping them on longer than that because I leave the house at 7, get back at 5:30 at best and would like to enjoy my tank until I hit the sack around 10:30 - that's more like, what 15.5 hours? Too long? What do those of you who work outside the home (WOH) do? Put them on a timer? Do your loaches come out more at night if you turn off your lights?
