OT- need info on carbon

I have always had planted tanks and the accepted practice was *not* to use carbon in your filtration. So, for yrs I never did.

But now I have 'the teeny fish' tank, with many very sensitive species of fish, like Poiceilocharax weitzmani, Fire rasboras, P. simulans (green fire or false neon tetras), etc.

The tank is usually ok, but new additions tend to introduce ich to the tank. So it's been recommended that I use carbon and I've seen the fish do much better and the tank be more stable when I use it. The plants, mostly med & low lite ones, dont seem to be suffering either.

But, I seem to remember reading on several different fish forums, in the past, that you have to replace the carbon about once a month, because it stops absorbing the ODCs. And even worse, once it reaches that capac
