Hibernating Loaches?

I have an interesting situation and would like input from our more
experienced experts. I have 3 clown loaches in a 30 gal tank. Just became
aware that i had not seen 2 of them perhaps for a few days. In the center
of the tank is an ornamental rock which is hollowed out and has a hole in
the bottom. Eventually i decided to pick it up and flip it over. There to
my surprise one jumps out, and after some major effort if finally got the
other out (he did not want to come out). I replace the rock making sure the
hole was well buried in the gravel. Immediately they started to bore into
the gravel (on their sides) attempting to get back in. I dont have a
problem if they want to live there, but im pretty sure they have not eaten
in days as they are never present in the tank
