Sorry i didn't spot your post or i'd have answered it sooner...

sand can be a bit of a pain with a ugf at times, but it's worth it when you get it right - you need to put a fine netting sheet down over the filter base to stop the grains being dragged through, most aquarium stores will sell the stuff.. if you're using powerheads it's also worth adding an extra piece of net at the base of the uplift tube (where it pushes into the UGF plates) just to make sure nothing comes through - if you get any sand through it'll make the powerhead impellor stick.

the only other thing is to make sure you turn the surface layer of sand over when you do any water changes, detritous doesn't g
