"malaysian wood" question (also on FWF)

ok, big step for me...well, for the loaches mostly; maybe the eupterus too. I got some what are called small pieces of this wood for the aquarium. it says it will discolor the water and so I have put the pieces in a bucket and indeed debris from the loose wood is floating on the water and coloration of it is occurring.

It also is supposed to lower the ph or was it soften the water slowly?...well, I'm hoping there's not enough to do that particularly as there are four pieces and only a couple will be in each tank that has 70 gal of water. What I'm wondering is whether to just go ahead and put the wood into the aquariums and live with the discoloration (which I was told would take about a month to go away) or work at (how?) eliminating this discoloration before putting the wood into the tank.

thanks for any experience, help anyone can provide.

Barbara
