Converting to Sand....Any Advice?

Though I like the look of my natural and black pea gravel substrate, I think my fish (Kuhlis and Corys in particular) would be a happier with sand. I like the look of the black and the rich colors it tends to bring out in Clowns.

I am thinking of going all black or mixing Tropic Isle Tahitian Moon Sand with pool filter sand for substrate in my 75g. Since the gravel is home to the greater part of my bio-filter I'm a little nervous about doing this. I remember a few others here making the switch a while back (I know, I should have paid more attention then) and I am hoping you could give me some pointers.

  • Did you keep a layer of the gravel beneath the sand or ditch all the gravel?

  • Did you do the whole bottom at once or in segmants over a peroid of time?

  • How do you keep the dreaded toxic gas pockets from forming?

  • If you use critters to keep the sand stirred, are my 3 Kuhlis going to be enough for a 75g?

  • Does sand present any maintainance challanges that gravel does not?

  • Is sand in the water column a problem and does it chew up your pump impellers?

  • How do you vacuum the stuff and keep the tank clean?
  • Thanks in advance for any thoughts or advice.
