Why don't some loaches grow?

I would be interested in suggestions as to why some individual loaches in a batch of apparently identical fish fail to grow and eventually become very thin. I have noticed this particularly with clowns and yo yo's. I suspect that some of these wild-caught fish are infected with flukes, which do not spread directly to other fish, but must pass through different hosts like snails, crustacea or water birds. This would explain why the condition never seems to spread to other fish, as the hosts are not present. If any parasitolologists or other experts are reading this, I would appreceiate comments and suggestions for treating this annoying con
