Substrate for Loaches

I have been planning a Discus tank. Most Discus breeders recommend no substrate / bare bottom for cleanliness and water quality. This has got me thinking if a bare bottom tank helps the water quality and health of a Discus tank why wouldn't it be best for my loach tanks?
Will the lack of substrate have a negative effect on the loaches? Do loaches need gravel, sand, etc to poke around in search of food? Is the increase in water quality worth removing all my gravel?
