New (to me) loach behaviour

I used to have an Osphronemus gorami (a giant gourami) in with my loaches, but he has a prickly fish and as he got larger he became more and more so. Ultimately, I had to sell him before he killed his tankmates. That was about a month or so ago, and now I keep discus.

Anyway, the loaches in my tank (clowns, histrionica and yoyos) are now acting MUCH different. They are constantly out, constantly fearless. They spend 90% of there time in the middle to upper regions of the tank, especially if I (the food guy) am in the room. I have a pretty thick mat of water sprite and duckweed on the surface, which, combined with not getting the crap beaten out of them whenever they venture up, has apparently given the whole tank a boost of self-confidence.
