Well the good people at linguists.org wouldn't answer my query about the root of 'Botia.' They told me to consult the complete Oxford dictionary at my local university... Duh!
Anyway, it is my opinion that the root does, in fact, come from the Sanskrit word, bodhi, meaning "awakening."
Sanskrit affected both Farsee, spoken in Iran, and the languages of the north of India - one could assume some influence into the Tibetan region.
I asked a Persian friend if he recognized a Farsee word similar to Botia, and he didn't, so I'm curious if anyone else has managed to find a Farsee homonym.
Wow, is that ever an obscure request!
