Recent nitrite levels...

I have heard that if nitrites are increasing or present despite water changes and a good filter system, one should reduce feeding as the first step and see if that levels things out.
Is this true?
I feed three times a day, but with a tight fist. The tank is planted, with CO2 added, like my other tanks...?
I don't know what the problem is. Please advise.
Thanks,
Mark in Vancouver.
