Gravel Change

I have never attempted this before--to change a working tanks gravel---im not sure how this would screw up the tanks environment. The reason for the change is I have this marble type "kiddy" gravel and I thought a smaller pebble/grainy type gravel would better suit the loaches for hiding and feeding

I was thinking of saving 50-75% of the old tank water to re-plenish after the gravel change --leaving plants and rocks in the old water in my buckets while Im doing this to save all the bacteria I can

Has any one had success doing this----most of my fish are pretty hearty but Id hate to lose my clowns,zebras if this is a major shock
