PH can it be fixed??

Okay... I was doing my weekly water change. I checked the pH (by the way the range on my pH kit is 6.0 -7.6) 7.6 beaing a lovely shade of teal. When I tested the pH the color that resulted was a dark blue and not a teal. So I drove to the local fish store. The closest and best one that I have found is petco. The indivdual at petco told me not to add anything that would affect the pH in the long run it would only kill the fish. Also the only reason I go to petco is Houston is about two hours away and I am always broke. The other local fish store that I tried fish keep dieing a day or two after the return day. I decided that I would contact the experts with loaches ... so ... what do I do?
