what loach for my cichlid setup?

ok i need to know the number and type of loach i should keep with less aggressive Lake Malawi cichlids. First, can they handle the high PH levels? Also, would you add the loaches before the cichlids or after?
Now to the species i have my eye on...
I love modestas, striatas, darios, and tigers. I want something that will not require more than 4 individuals (if only 1, that is fine), and will be aggressive enough to stay out (i don't want a fish any more shy than my kubotais), yet not so aggressive as to take over the tank. My other main question is that the Mbunas are mainly herbivores and anything beyond 30% protein is harmful. Would there be a way to control who eats what or keep the loaches on the same diet?
What do you think?

PS: i am still only planning this 55 gal. tank, but i want to know as much as i can and have a stocking list before i buy fish.
