My Poor clown loach

Got my first loach yesterday but the poor thing died today within 24 hours. I took him back to the LFS with a sample of my water and he told me that the reason he died was that the PH level was too high at 7.4. However I have read they like it between 6-7.5, The loach was only young and was kept in a tank at the LFS in a PH level of 7.0 - anybody think it was perhaps the shock that killed him?
