Discovery - Duh...

Hey.
We'd been talking about powerheads and added filtration recently, and Leadfoot had some good DIY tips for adapting quick-filters so you don't have to constantly replace them...
Well, I've made a little discovery that's worth mentioning, I think.
I bought a small size Aquaclear Quick Filter - the ones that attach to Aquaclear powerheads, and it comes with a black cannister, the tight mesh, disposable filter, and a central cylinder to keep the filter from collapsing. Then I got a Fluval foam sleeve insert (size 2). This is basically just a hollow cyliner of blue filter foam, but they come with a "core" - which you're supposed to remove. Aha!
The core fits perfectly inside the central cylinder for the quick filter, and the foam sleeve fits snugly over the same piece. These all fit snugly back inside the black cannister, which attaches to the powerhead. Hurrah! No more replacement filters for the thing! This sponge job should last indefinitely, and it can be treated like any other biological filter - just rinse it out in spent tank water, and it's good as new. The powerhead's stream doesn't decrease due to over-clogging that you get with the regular quick filters, either.
Hope that made sense. Maybe I'll attempt a photo.
Mark.
